Diphthongs
Diphthongs
A smart reader should think of words like: boy,now, boat andfile, as they seem to bear two preceding vowels in one syllable which does not accord with the mentioned syllabic patterns. So we have to add some special vowels to our classification table. These new vowels are called diphthongs.
General American diphthongs are as follows:
/eI/ as in day [ deI ]
/oƱ/ as in boat [ boƱt ]
/aI/ as in file [ faIl ]
/aƱ/ as in vowel [ vaƱəl ]
/ɔI/ as in boy [ bɔI ]
